Geek World Episode 1: Solder on (pun intended)

Geek World Episode 1

As promised, I am taking the Raspberry Pi for a spin. I’ve talked about using it as a LAMP server (which I am doing), and about using it to interface some hardware. So I got myself some equipment and just threw myself off a cliff. Figuratively speaking.

At the local electronics store I got the following:

  • A breadboard. Used for electronics prototyping.
  • A Raspberry Pi breakout card. Used for getting the input/output (known as GPIO) on to the breadboard.
  • Some LEDs, resistors, a LED ramp, and some cables.
  • A soldering station and solder.

When I got home, all that remained to add was a bit of courage, and get the equipment in place.

The process of figuring out how a breadboard works, trying to figure out resistor schemes and how to connect the Raspberry Pi output took a couple of hours.  In my defense, that time also included learning some basics about Python programming.

I may not be so fast these days, but with age comes improvement in patience, which gives my brain time to catch up enough to figure out how things work. I find that to be more helpful than throwing stuff out the window when things go bad.

Anyway, to make a long story short I actually created a video to give you a couple of minutes of pure joy. Let me know what you think.

Thank you for reading,

Björn, take a look at Modulo on the website. Could be of interest for projects for the farm with the “PI”. Great stuff as it looks for this Kick-starter project.
